Markus Heilig is the director of the Centre for Social and Affective Neuroscience (CSAN) at Linköping University. Here, knowledge and methods from different fields of neuroscience, both basal and clinical, are integrated to find causes and treatments for alcohol addiction. During the process of addiction, changes in brain function occur that lead to an increased sensitivity to stress and stress-induced relapse. Professor Heilig´s research group has recently found that a broad and persistent reprogramming of the frontal lobe transcriptome contributes to these changes. Recent work focuses on identifying the epigenetic mechanisms underlying the reprogramming of the transcriptome.
